Role
Sr. UX Designer / Architecture
The NIH Office of the Director (OD) is the central office within the National Institutes of Health (NIH) responsible for setting policy and coordinating programs across all 27 of its Institutes and Centers (ICs). It essentially acts as the overall manager and coordinator for the entire NIH. My duties was to research users pain-points, address them and redesign the ODP portal.
At the National Institutes of Health, Office of Disease Prevention (NIH ODP), I led the UX strategy and redesign of their legacy portal—improving accessibility, usability, and overall stakeholder alignment across departments. This transformation started with extensive discovery, where I conducted user and stakeholder interviews to gather pain points, align business goals, and build consensus around the platform’s future vision.
Using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research, I analyzed user behavior data and formulated a clear prioritization strategy to guide development. I conducted a heuristic evaluation of the legacy portal and presented my findings, along with a new strategic UX approach, to NIH leadership.
From there, I redefined the portal’s information architecture, designed user flows and wireframes, and developed mid-fidelity UI designs, ensuring 508 compliance and usability standards were built into every touchpoint. I also managed and directed two UI designers, aligning all visual design work to brand guidelines and accessibility needs.
In tandem with the platform redesign, I also led the development of a comprehensive internal and external marketing campaign to support the portal’s relaunch. This included email marketing, internal awareness materials, and social media campaigns targeted to NIH stakeholders and end users to encourage engagement and platform adoption.
